Immigration
Just before the 4th of July 2010 weekend, President Obama starts the process to try for Immigration Reform. The financial problems delayed this about a year in my opinion but had to be considered first as did health care reform.
But it's time to draw some lines in the sand. It is a very complicated issue but:
1. It is delusional to say 'send them home'
2. Our economy is driven by their efforts
3. Children of illegal immigrants born in this country are American Citizens - no less so than I am
4. Do you send the parents of these American Citizens home?
They come for jobs. If we did not want them employed, we as a country would require e-verify for all employment but as for now:
from http://employeeissues.com/blog/e-verify-states/ :
According to the law firm of Fisher & Phillips, the states of AK, AZ, CO, GA, MO, MS, OK, SC and RI now require certain employers and state agencies to verify the employment eligibility of new-hires by using the E-Verify System. Additionally:
TN encourages employers to use E-Verify
ID, MN, NC, PA and UT mandate that state agencies must use it
CA, CO, FL, IA, IL, IN, KS, MN, MO, NJ, PA, RI, TN and WV and are considering new immigration laws involving E-Verify.
----
Believe it or not:
"Utah will soon join three other states voluntarily implementing E-Verify, which is designed to cut back on jobs for undocumented workers and, by extension, reduce illegal immigration."
(as of July 4, 2010)
Three out of 50!
To say we as a people do not want illegal immigrants hired is simply a lie.
To not define the immigration process and employment requirements is nuts - it's time to work it out. Any defined process is better than what we have!
Let the debate "begin" and lets finally make an attempt to define our solution - we can!
